More About Fire Rated Glass
It is used in building doors and windows and can help keep flames and smoke from spreading from one room to another. Standard window glass will break when it reaches 250 degrees F. Tempered glass can last to about 500 degrees F. Fire rated ceramic glass can survive heat in excess of 1600 degrees F.
The term “fire-rated glass” refers to the complete set of fire-rated glazing products available in the market. Within that wide category, designers can choose from both “fire-protective” and “fire-resistive” glazing products, depending on their project’s requirements.
Fire Protective
Fire protective means the glazing defends against the spread of flames and smoke for its designated fire rating. Fire-protective glazing typically is available with fire ratings ranging from 20 to 180 minutes, with varying impact safety ratings. Since it does not block the transfer of radiant and conductive heat, it is subject to area and size limitations under the applicable building code.
Fire Resistive
Fire resistive glass provides the same defense against flames and smoke as fire-protective glazing, but adds further protection by blocking the transfer of radiant and conductive heat.
FireLite NT (3/16” thick) and FireLite Plus (5/16” thick) are considered fire protective and not a barrier to radiant heat.

FireLite® Fire Rated Glass FAQS
Fire rated glass has been designed to act as a barrier to the spread of flames and smoke. Ratings are given based on the length of time the glass remains intact. Fire-rated glass ratings range from 20 minutes up to three hours, depending on the product and framing system.
FireLite® is a fire-rated glass ceramic. It is a wireless product looks like ordinary window glass. FireLite® provides fire ratings from 20 minutes to 3 hours, and come in sizes up to 24 square feet per lite. Glass ceramics such as FireLite® can withstand the thermal shock of water from sprinklers or fire hoses. Where impact safety is required, they are available with up to Category II (CPSC 16CFR 1201) impact-safety ratings
“Fire-protective” means the glass defends against the spread of flames and smoke.
“Fire-resistive” glass provides the same defense as fire-protective glass and protects further by blocking the transfer of radiant and conductive heat.
No, To manufacture / cut FireLite® glass, Peninsula Glass (OneDayGlass.com) had to be approved as a TGP (Technical Glass Products) manufacturing location and work under TGP’s UL Listing File. This includes undergoing regular UL inspections. FireLite products must be permanently marked or etched, indicating testing and hourly rating compliance in accordance with Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.® (UL) Classification Cards. The mark also serves to identify the UL File number for easy reference by the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) in the field.

Temperature-rise doors are designed to limit heat transfer from one side of the door to the other. It is a measurement of the rise in temperature above ambient temperature of the non-exposed side of the door during the first 30 minutes of a standard fire test. The lower the degrees, the better the rating.
Absolutely, fire rated glass is a specialized product designed to provide increased protection against fire. Unlike standard glass, it’s engineered to withstand extreme heat, helping to prevent the spread of fire and smoke, and offering crucial time for evacuation. At One Day Glass, we supply custom-cut fire rated glass to meet the specific needs of various building projects.
The two types of fire rated glass are fire-protective and fire-resistive. Fire-protective glass acts as a barrier against flames and smoke, typically used in interior applications. Fire-resistive glass, which includes products like our FireLite® Glass, offers a higher level of protection by also blocking heat transfer, making it suitable for more demanding applications where additional protection is required.
No, tempered glass is not the same as fire rated glass. Tempered glass is heat-treated for increased strength and safety, shattering into small granules instead of sharp shards. However, fire rated glass like our FireLite® offerings is specifically designed to withstand the intense temperatures of a fire, providing vital fire protection and safety that goes beyond what tempered glass can offer.
Among the most fire-resistant products on the market is FireLite® Fire Rated Glass, widely recognized as the industry’s preferred fire-rated glazing from Technical Glass Products. This superior fire-resistive glass not only contains flames and smoke but also significantly reduces heat transfer, which can be crucial in safeguarding both life and property during a fire.
Fire rated glass is more costly due to the specialized manufacturing process and materials required to meet stringent safety standards. It’s a sophisticated product that provides critical protection in fire incidents. Our FireLite® Glass, for instance, is an investment in safety, offering peace of mind with its fire-resistant properties and compliance with safety regulations.
